When you're driving along and your car breaks down, stress soon starts to settle in. It's essential that you keep yourself and anyone else in the vehicle safe. You may need to use a towing service to ensure you reach a place where a mechanic can fix your vehicle. Here's how to do so safely.

Keep Essentials in Your Car

Keep a small pack of essentials in your car just in case you break down. You'll need to prepare for different weather eventualities. Having blankets just in case it's cold and water for hot days can help you temporarily keep the effects of adverse weather conditions at bay. Additionally, include items that help you stay visible. Having a hi-viz waistcoat of some form and a reflective triangle to place behind your vehicle makes you clear to other road users. It gives them a chance to avoid you when they drive past.

Leave the Vehicle

Unless the weather conditions are particularly poor, don't remain in the vehicle. If another driver hits the vehicle and you're sitting in it, you're at risk of harm. Try moving behind roadside barriers or staying on a nearby verge. When you do leave the vehicle, make sure you leave your handbrake on and switch on your hazard lights. Keeping your hazard lights on allows you to remain visible to other road users and makes it easier for the roadside assistance team to find you.

Have Assistance Numbers

Make sure you add a couple of emergency towing service numbers to your phone. If you break down at a remote location, you can't rely on having enough internet data to find a number. However, you may still be able to call someone. Ensure you make a note of which emergency tow truck services are available around the clock, especially if you're driving at night.

Know How to Tow

The service that comes to your rescue will offer advice on how to help them tow you safely. Generally, it's a good idea to have your hazard lights on so that other road users can identify you as being towed. They may also ask you to gently steer your vehicle in synchrony with theirs and apply light brake pressure to prevent jolting. If you've been involved in an accident, make sure you feel physically capable of assisting with the towing. Otherwise, the team you call out can find a way to tow without your involvement.
